Billy Graham Quotes

Inspirational quotes from Billy Graham the most-renowned Christian evangelist in American history who is known for his annual “crusades”, large gatherings at which he preached.

Billy Graham (1918-2018) also appeared not only on his own TV specials, but on shows such as Meet the Press, The Jack Paar Show, and the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Graham’s life’s work was to spread Christianity–he was a non-denominational Protestant and he was successful. He was said to have preached the word to some 215 million people in 185 countries.

Born in 1918, Graham grew up in the countryside near Charlotte, Carolina; Graham preached his first sermon in 1937, as a student at the Florida Bible Institute.

After getting married in 1943, Graham began his ministerial career in ’44, serving as the minister of the First Baptist Church in Western Spring, Illinois.

After serving as president of a small Bible college and filling various roles in the ministry, Billy held his first revival meeting, in Los Angeles in 1949. This event was so popular that it kept going for six weeks, got national media attention, and would become the first of Graham’s world-famous crusades.

Those crusades would go on to include 400 events throughout the United States and nearly 200 non-U.S. cities.

Graham’s fame spread to the point that he met every president who served during his ministry, from Eisenhower through Trump. He served as the spiritual advisor to President Obama, the 44th U.S. President. Graham expanded his ministry to his long-running radion show Hour of Decision, a magazine, a film production company, numerous TV specials, and later, his website.

Because he appeared on mainstream TV shows and hobnobbed with elites, Graham was known to the general public, and became the symbol for evangelical Christians. He inspired a wave of televangelists such as Jimmy Swaggart , Jim Bakker , and Joel Osteen . Graham managed to avoid scandals that sullied the reputations of several evangelists.

In 2013, 900 people attended a 95th birthday party for Graham in Asheville, North Carolina. By then, Billy Graham was suffering from hydrocephalus, a condition sometimes called “water on the brain.”

Graham died on Feb. 21, 2018. To many, Billy Graham’s life was one of hard work to preach the gospel. He will be remembered for his prominent role in America’s religious life and the respect he earned from many high officials.
